After Hours is a young yet highly credentialed Melbourne jazz group. Each member is a skilled VCA graduate with extensive experience, including a performance for the Queen of England at Government House and weddings and functions at venues such as the Melbourne Town Hall, the MCG and Crown Casino.  Let After Hours help you while away the evening with their impressive repertoire of jazz classics and modern favourites.

The Autumn In New York Trio effortlessly recreate the sophisticated sounds of authentic acoustic bebop jazz, New York style. Featuring tenor saxophone,  double bass and drums, the graduate ensemble are seasoned professionals who draw on their experiences learning from some of New York's musical elite including George Coleman and Barry Harris to deliver a touch of laid-back class to every event.

Formed in the summer of 2010, instrumental surf rock band The Bluebottles feature the guitar slinging Hubbard brothers; Michael and Joe joined by Richie 'Rich' Bradbeer on bass guitar and Sam Raines on the skins. Wherever they go audiences shake their bodies in a crazed, free-wheeling fashion, cutting loose to the unhinged beat!

Bon Appétit is an established student quartet, experienced at creating a relaxed atmosphere and providing a fine element of class to any occasion.  The quartet features a double-bass, piano (or keyboard), drums and a flautist who doubles as lead vocalist in both French and English.  Each member is reputable in their own right, having performed at numerous festivals across Australia and venues such as Hamer Hall, The National Gallery, Bennetts Lane and Federation Square.  As well as their regular jazz, latin and swing inspired repertoire, Bon Appétit can also cater to most special occasions, with an eclectic collection of birthday and Christmas songs.

BRAZIL ENSEMBLE

Brazil Ensemble are known for their outstanding musicianship, extensive repertoire and tailored performances crafted specifically to enhance your event.   Groove focussed guitar, beautifully toned saxophone and mellow driving bass form the core of the ensemble however they can expand to include flute, piano, percussion and trumpet.

Deco Duo play jazz and blues with sophisticated style. Gideon Brazil's (saxophone, flute) beautiful tone and impressive technique has seen him perform/record with such artists as Gotye, Slava Grigoryan and Bob Sedergreen and Darrin Archer shows formidable command of the piano. As a duo and individually both have established themselves as main stayers in the Melbourne scene.

Guitarists Adam May and Paul Carey have lived, performed and studied throughout South America, Europe and Australia. Playing a range of Latin styles from Spanish and Brazilian together with other South American sounds which encompass beautiful ballads to fiery guitar duels. DUO AGOGO play all functions and events with minimal space and set up required.

UM DUO ENCANTADOR

Emma Knight and Alexandra Velasco have been playing together since November 2014. Falling in love with the diverse sounds of Brazil years prior to their initial meet-up, both musicians came together looking to start up a Brazilian choro project. What resulted was the intimate and charming Um Duo Encantador; a flute and guitar duo focusing on the diverse range of popular and chamber works of Brazil. Composers such as Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolim, Guinga and Waldir Azevedo form just a small part of the duos repertory.

Gypsy Jam play gypsy jazz or ‘jazz manouche’ as popularised by the renowned guitarist Django Reinhardt. Its members have been lucky enough to learn the style in Paris, the very place where Django and friends left such a prominent cultural mark. Book Gypsy jam for instant, understated cool and a band that appeals to just about everyone.

Jazz De Resistance formed in 2006; their chemistry, playful approach and great passion for music is immediately evident to those who watch. Members of the quintet have performed with James Morrison, Kutcha Edwards, and the Australian Pops Orchestra and they have been featured at venues including the Sydney Opera House, Hamer Hall, The Arts Centre and Bennetts Lane.

Freelance guitarist Jon Delaney has the cool and charisma of musicians twice his age. He performs regularly with his own band, and alongside some of the foremost talents on the Melbourne improvised music scene. In 2006 he was accepted into the Banff Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music, a highly sought after residency in Canada.

Joy Spring comprises of Michelle Scully on double bass and Andrew Bradsworth on electric and acoustic guitars. The duo bring decades of music performance experience to their performances and an expressive and sensitive approach to their arrangements of jazz and well known tunes by The Beatles, The Church and Prince to name a few.

Guitarists Paul Carey and Julian Scheffer play music that sits somewhere between classical guitar and jazz with Brazilian repertoire that is full of light, heat, melancholy and romance. Since their musical meeting in Glora, Rio de Janeiro, both VCA graduates have studied under Doug de Vries, developed a large repertoire of South American music and more recently released a CD or original works titled "Ao Meu Lado".

LAA is an exciting jazz trio comprising the talents of classically trained Louise Goh, (piano and vocals), Adam Spiegl (double bass) and Adam Coad (drum kit). Formed in 2009 LAA has amassed a gorgeous repertoire of jazz and contemporary tunes and been in hot demand ever since. Their music is characterised by a lyrical quality accompanied by infectious grooves.

The most French band in Melbourne's Inner North, La Mauvaise Reputation takes its inspiration from the greats of the French Chanson tradition including Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Georges Brassens, Charles Aznavour and Serge Gainsbourg. From roaring swing to ballads of loss, the banf faithfully recreate the beautiful French standards of the 20s-40s and the Manouche Jazz of Django Reinhardt.

ORLANDO COMBO

Orlando Combo gives you the genuine jazz experience from Melbourne's best working band with a blend of swing/blues/bossa nova and groove. They believe a good band can add atmosphere without drawing the focus away from proceedings but step it up when entertainment is required. Inspiration comes from Louis Armstrong, Oscar Peterson, Frank Sinatra, Stan Getz and Miles Davis.

PEP TALK - touring during 2016

Pep Talk is a trio of friends and like minded musicians, playing their own version of gyspy jazz/swing on violin (Pepita Emmerichs), guitar (Lincoln McKenzie) and double bass (Stephen Hornby). Having met in 2011 while studying improvisation and jazz at the VCA, they are now some of the most sought after session players in their fields individually, and as a group have become a favourites in the gypsy jazz scene. They have a rich and diverse repertoire of music perfect as a backdrop or feature performance for all celebratory occasions.

QUIET NIGHTS

If you are looking to create a relaxed and sophisticated atmosphere, look no further.  The Quiet Nights duo set just the right mood for events of all sizes.  Playing a thoughtful selection of your favourite swing tunes and classy bossa novas, the dulcet tones of the flute and guitar are the perfect combination: smooth, relaxing, flexible, and an elegant “band experience” for the price of two musicians.  All you have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy.

In the tradition of the swinging Bluenote era hammond organ groups of the 1950’s & 60’s, the Southside Hammond Clan performs with original style and energy. Their repertoire ranges from jazz, blues and soul through to fresh arrangements of pop and rock classics and their combined experience and professionalism make them the ideal choice for any event.

SWAY

Let SWAY transported back in time to the magical Bebop era of the 1940’s when Charlie Parker and Max Roach breathed new life into Jazz music.  Sway combine lyricism and harmonies with nimble melodic playing to create a sound so toe-tappingly good, so classy and so enjoyable that you will want to hear them over and over again.

Technicolour Ensemble is an experienced and versatile group of young musicians performing jazz and improvised music. At its core is a trio consisting of guitarist Patrick Stockwell, drummer Michael McNab and double bassist Stephanie Bell. The ensemble is flexible in size (2-8 members) and has played everything from corporate functions to 1940's themed cocktail parties.

Soloists

Darrin Archer has gained a solid reputation for his formidable command of the piano, quick-witted style and skills as a compser.  He plays with many on the city's best musicians including Lily Dior and Gian Slater at venues including Bennetts Lane, Dizzy’s and Manchester Lane. Darrin was recently a finalist in the National Jazz Awards. He is utterly committed to his craft and a delight to listen to.

Jamil Zacharia is one of the most promising young jazz guitarists in Melbourne, effortlessly conjuring melodic statements whilst staying true to the spirit of traditional jazz. Jamil’s potential was first acknowledged at age 17 when he bypassed his final year of school to gain early entry into a Bachelor of Contemporary Music at Southern Cross University in Lismore with renowned guitarist Jim Kelly. Now a VCA graduate,  Jamil can play solo as a duo or with a small ensemble.

JOSEPH BOURKE

Joseph is a Pianist of tremendous versatility who has performed throughout Australia and abroad. Known for his ability to create layered colours and his clean, precise style.

Joseph has an extensive and comprehensive repertoire that spans the centuries and many genres.  From the noble heights of Chopin’s Nocturne to the swinging beat of a Duke Ellington classic or an interpretation of a Beatle’s favourite, Joseph is sure to impress. Perfect for corporate events, weddings and private parties

Nick began playing guitar in 1990 and has been playing professionally for many years.  He has performed at festivals including the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Williamstown Jazz Festival and Apollo Bay Folk Festival and at jazz clubs locally and internationally from Germany through to Hong King. VIPs Nick has played for include former U.S. president Bill Clinton, Rupert Murdoch and Kerry Packer.

 

LIAM BUTLER WEBB

 

Liam Butler Webb is an exceptional classical jazz pianist with an extensive and exciting repertoire perfect for cocktail lounge atmospheres, private parties and corporate settings.  His consummate keyboard skills will get you moving, tapping your feet and clicking your fingers to some great jazz tunes.

 

Liam is also available to perform in a group context, with the possibility of both male and female vocals

 

 

PAUL CAREY

 

Paul’s music is full of passion and sentiment.  It reflects the very essence and soul of Brazil and Argentina.  Focusing on samba and bossa nova style beats found in the Choro sound, expect extraordinary rhythms, exciting melodic leaps, unexpected modulations and occasional breakneck tempos.

Spacecadet Lullabies is Matt Lewin, an electronic music producer and guitarist based in St Kilda East, Melbourne.  Matt uses a range of stringed and percussion instruments from South-East Asia, electric guitars, voices, electronic production and samples from his kitchen, to create his pieces.  Ranging from minimal ambience to abstract electronic hip hop, no live show is ever the same, with each performance featuring new songs and special guests.

Let AFTER HOURS help you while away the evening with their extensive repertoire of much-loved jazz classics, French love songs and modern favourites.  This sophisticated five piece jazz combo specialises in bringing the best sound, the best rhythms and the best jazz vocals to life.  They will enthral and captivate your audience and ensure your event is remembered. 

This talented group of musicians have performed in Europe, Asia and throughout Australia.  All members are graduates from the VCA.  AFTER HOURS features both male and female vocals upon request.

ANNEMARIE SHARRY

The smooth vocal stylings of Annemarie Sharry bring a sophisticated sense of musicianship to bear on the jazz classics.
She performs with ensembles ranging in size from duo toquintet, delivering moods that vary from mellow and intimate, to up-tempo and exciting. In a larger context, Latin jazz features more heavily, as the influences of Astrid Gilberto shine through.  In 1996, Annemarie was awarded the Australian Blues Singer of the Year award, signposting her considerable vocal talents to the music public.

Araliya is an intimate acoustic trio featuring vocalist Nilusha Baeder, guitarist Hugh Paddle and percussionist Alex Pertout performing charming arrangements of jazz, Latin and contemporary popular compositions.

BIRDS JAZZ TRIO

Birds jazz trio is led by the acclaimed Jazz vocalist, Cathy Menezes.  Hailing from Columbia and with an impressive Jazz lineage*Cathy is known for her distinctive expressive vocal style and her diverse repertories spanning Jazz, Latin and the classics.  Birds jazz Trio will bring groove and rhythm to every event and can also be expanded to a quartet if required

The Ding-a-Lings keep you swinging with instrumental jazz, rock & roll and R & B from the 50s and 60s with the tunes of Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Bo Diddley amongst other greats.

ERICA'S GIN JULEP

Led by vocalist and guitarist Erica Bramham, the Gin Julep specialise in recreating the sound of the golden age of jazz.  Playing songs from the 1920s and 30s, the band transport audiences back in time to a candlelit speakeasy where the cocktails are cold and the music is hot.

Kate Vigo’s music career has taken her to festivals and renowned venues Australia wide including Hammer Hall, Bennetts Lane, Port Fairy Folk Festival, Queenscliff Festival to name a few. With a background in jazz improvisation and a studied love of Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, Kate delivers jazz standards, pop classics and original compositions in a fluid and natural signature style.

GEORGIE DARVIDIS and FULL BLOOM

Georgie is an exquisite vocalist.  Her sound is all mellow jazz, honeyed rhythms and silvery sounds. As one of Melbourne’s most exciting and in demand young vocalists, Georgie Darvidis heads up a Jazz ensemble known for their professionalism, their exciting beats and their extensive repertoire.  Whether you are planning a wedding reception, major launch, significant event, birthday party or an award presentation, Georgie Darvidis ensemble will add the icing to your cake.

Named after the famous work by Proust, Le Temps retrouvé follow in the footsteps of music icons Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappell performing a mix of Gypsy music, traditional jazz and French standards. Featuring vocals, violin, double bass and guitar the musicians have played with an impressive array of artists including Missy Higgins, Kasey Chambers, and James Morrison.

The Moodists bring a love of vocal music and a wealth of personal and professional experience to their live performance, with some of their highlights including festivals at the Arts Centre, the Australia Day launch at Federation Square and the City of Yarra Christmas Carnivale.

Nilusha Baeder has a unique vocal style that incorporates soulful sounds with rhythmic improvisation. She has performed with Renee Geyer, Kate Ceberano, Jon Stevens and the MSO, Kim Wilde, James Morrison, Don Burrows and Bob Sedergreen amongst others and has been resident vocalist/arranger for Channel 7 and 9 on shows including Australia’s Got Talent, X Factor, Carols by Candlelight and the Footy Show.

OH PEP!  Touring in 2016

Oh Pep! centres on songwriters Olivia Hally (guitar, vocals) and Pepita Emmerichs (violin, mandolin) with the addition of drums and bass, thrown in for good measure! The duo or quartet  play a mix of quirky original pop/folk music and classic songs by artists such as Leonard Cohen and Paul Kelly. Favourites of the Australian folk festival scene, they have toured internationally since 2013 in North America and Europe and are recipients of numerous
accolades including the 2014 Folk Alliance Australia performer of the year award.

A quirky and upbeat group led by Dale Lindrea, The Plezurhounds bring a light-hearted freshness and fun to the popular jazz repertoire to make your party go!   The band typically comprises of vocals/bass and guitar, but is easily extended to a quintet upon request.

Committed to doing justice to history’s great jazz standards, SWAY vocals deliver classic jazz, skilfully treated with passion and musical sensitivity.  SWAY will transport you back in time to the magical Bebop era of the 1940’s when Charlie Parker and Max Roach breathed new life into Jazz music. 

 

TOM BARTON ENSEMBLE

Tom sings jazz standards with the soul of a balladeer and the spirit of an instrumentalist. Tom’s music is adventurous, engaging and heart-warming.  He uncovers the essence of timeless jazz repertoire and delivers it profoundly with his considerable vocal technique.

Tom’s 2014 album Aspirations was heralded by a 4.5-star review in The Weekend Australian as, “a breakthrough in leading-edge jazz vocals … the arrival of a unique new talent.” Aspirations was shortlisted for the 2015 Jazz Bell Awards Best Australian Jazz Vocal Album.
