DIRECTOR Baz Luhrmann has cast alumna Elizabeth Debicki (B(Drama) 2010) for a key role in his film adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Ms Elizabeth Debicki, a relatively unknown actor, has landed the part of Jordan Baker, a professional golfer and the love interest of protagonist Nick Carraway, who will be played by Tobey Maguire (Spider-man, Brothers).
Ms Debicki, who was born in Paris and immigrated to Australia at the age of five, was trained in dance before her focus shifted to theatre.
Prior to the Victorian College of the Arts, Mc Debicki appeared in the 2007 Top Acts Showcase and received a Premier's VCE Award for Drama. While at the VCA her roles have included, Woman 1 in The Black Sequin Dress, Sara in Have I None, Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing, Dr Pohl/Bobba in Ghetto and Gerda in The Hollow.
She was the recipient of the 2009 Richard Pratt Bursary for an outstanding actor in their second year of training.
The Great Gatsby, by the late American author F. Scott Fitzgerald, is set in the 1920s and is a timeless story about a mysterious self-made millionaire who buys his way into Long Island high society.
The cast also includes Leonardo DiCaprio (Inception, Shutter Island) as Jay Gatsby and Carey Mulligan (An Education, Never Let Me Go) as Daisy Buchanan.
