Thesis Title
Hanging in There: Modalities of the Interval in Feminist Art

Abstract

The recent decade has seen a recuperation of feminist art, to date still limited by the problematic of representing the feminine. Kindled by continental philosophy, in particular the writings of Luce Irigaray,  this project explores aspects of surface, decoration and excess to address these limitations and materialise sexual difference.  Through a studio based practice of handmade and intuitive processes industrial materials are reconfigured into abstracted patterns and forms in space.  This Phd project draws on theories of the interval, material culture and weaving to advance a feminist dialogue and ask the key question, is there a feminist phenomenology in sculpture?
