Dr. Katve-Kaisa Kontturi is a McKenzie Postdoctoral Fellow in the Victorian College of the Arts at the University of Melbourne. Her research interests spread across material-relational philosophies of the body and art, new materialist research practices, contemporary art-making, craftivism, fashion and fabrics. The key question of her work, both research and curatorial, is how the political in art is inseparable from the affective and material qualities of art.

Her current project "Affective Fabrics of Contemporary Art: Stitching Global Relations" studies the ubiquity of fabrics in today’s art world, and encompasses craftivism as well as the political use of fashion and textiles in art- and exhibition-making. It looks, for example, into fashion exhibitions travelling from a country to another, knitted and crocheted demonstration banners, and multi/cross-cultural craft collectives.

Katve-Kaisa co-convenes the Matters of the Body Research Cluster at VCA-MCM. She is also a founding member of the European New Materialist Network funded by the ISCH-COST (2014-2018), and co-leads its working group “Embracing Creative Arts”.
